At Friends of the Animal Shelter of St. Bernard, we don't just talk about the problem of pet overpopulation, we are actually doing something about it.  Our goal is to insure that every pet born in our parish has a permanent, responsible home.  Along with our shelter, we have made measurable, substantial progress toward this goal by addressing the root causes of the problem.  You can be a part of the solution, too! Join our Friends of the Animal Shelter yahoo group. and check out our Volunteer Opportunities.

Need help finding your pet after Katrina?  We can help!

Hurricane Katrina completely devastated our community.  Out of the destruction and heartbreak, we have had one unexpected benefit:  St. Bernard Parish has become a No-Kill Community, years ahead of schedule!

What does being a No-Kill Community mean?  It means that the citizens of St. Bernard Parish are no longer using euthanasia as the primary means to control the pet population.  The St. Bernard Parish Animal Shelter and our Friends of the Animal Shelter are committed to preventing the births of unwanted pets and to find new homes for unwanted and discarded pets that are healthy and behaviorally sound as well as those that are "near adoptable" but need some medical care. The shelter will still have no choice to euthanize pets that are sick, infectious, in severe pain, or those whose temperaments would place people and/or other pets in danger.

It will not be easy to maintain a No-Kill community.  As residents return and our parish recovers, it will be up to us to insure that no healthy, adoptable pet will die in St. Bernard Parish simply because there is no room in the shelter.

If you would like watch our progress and recovery, join our FOAS yahoo group.  If you would like to actively work to keep St. Bernard Parish a No-Kill community, please  join Friends of the Animal Shelter of St. Bernard or click on the Volunteer Opportunities link above.
