"St. Bernard is NO-KILL. How do we stay that way?"

Plans
The "cat problem" has been created and perpetuated by human failure to control the breeding of domestic cats. Many kind-hearted people feed stray, neighborhood and/or feral cats, but neglect to have them sterilized which results in an explosion of unwanted cats in our community.

Sadly, this population has been largely ignored in most communities in the United States, but Friends is determined to stop the killing of healthy animals in St. Bernard Parish.  At Friends of the Animal Shelter, we don't just talk about the problem of pet overpopulation, we are actually doing something about it!

Any resident of St. Bernard may participate by visiting St. Bernard Parish Animal Control from 8am - Noon Mondays through Fridays; 8am - 11am Saturdays, to receive a SpayLouisiana voucher. Vouchers are accepted by participating veterinarians to spay or neuter your cat(s) for a $10 co-payment on the date of surgery. Friends of the Animal Shelter will help any residents with the co-payment. Please contact Ceily at 504 401-0709 for reimbursement.

For more information about our program, call the shelter at 278-1535 (postKatrina: 228-1093).  Humane traps and holding cages can be borrowed at no charge, but a deposit to insure return is required.

Katrina's silver lining is that St. Bernard Parish has become a NO-KILL COMMUNITY years ahead of schedule! Please help us stay that way by having your cats spayed or neutered; please help all your friends, relatives and neighbors get their cats fixed, too!
Because Friends believes in the sanctity of all life, we have developed "Operation CatSnip", a program that embraces a non-lethal trap-neuter-return method to control and reduce the overpopulation of neighborhood and feral cats in St. Bernard Parish.  Before Katrina, thanks to donations and the generosity of the Meraux Estate, Friends had taken the lead to provide the means for ALL cats to be spayed or neutered in our parish.  Post Katrina, we have added our ASPCA Spay/Neuter grant to those given to SpayLouisiana, insuring that St. Bernard citizens will always have access to low-cost, high quality spay and neuter!
"There has to be a better way than euthanasia!"
"We prefer TNR to euthanasia"
"We may be inside cats, but we still need to be fixed!"
"We weren't fixed and now we have 12 children!"
Check back often; we plan to add other helpful links and tips on dealing with feral & neighborhood cats.
