Friends Implements Training Program for Shelter Dogs
Studies have shown that the vast majority of dogs in shelters lose their homes because of behavior problems.  And once at a shelter, a dog that has no manners -- jumps on people, won't walk quietly on a leash, will not come when called -- is not very attractive to potential adopters.  Our new Behavior & Training Coordinator, Yogi Johnson of Pets for Adoption, Inc., has developed a program to address behavior problems common to shelter dogs.  By training our shelter dogs, we hope to make them more appealing to potential adopters and, once adopted, to keep them in their new homes permanently.  Our shelter's student volunteers have enthusiastically volunteered to be handlers, but more volunteers are needed.
This training class is St. Bernard Parish Animal Shelter and Friends of the Animal Shelter's latest endeavor to make St. Bernard Parish a "No Kill Community."  Our highest priority will remain our spay/neuter programs; but behavior classes brings us to the next level by proactively addressing another important issue of care for homeless animals.  Training before an adoption can mean the difference between a forever home and another shelter return.  For further information, call the shelter at 278-1535.
If you would like to help us on the road to success, please consider volunteering.  You will have the rewarding experience of helping a homeless pet, and learn about dog training at the same time.  As dog handlers, volunteers will learn the art of communicating with dogs and the value of consistency in training.  Classes are held every Tuesday evening at the St. Bernard  Parish Animal Shelter, 115 Agriculture Road in Chalmette, from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.  Volunteer handlers are asked to wear tennis shoes (no sandals, please) and long pants with pockets.
