ADOPTION POLICY - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
- All adopted pets remain the property of St. Bernard Parish Animal Shelter until all terms of the adoption are completely fulfilled. Adopters receive actual ownership of the adopted pet upon notification from a veterinarian that the pet has been examined, and if not previously done, received its rabies vaccination and has been spayed or neutered.
- Pets available for adoption are not held or reserved for anyone. Placement of one's name on a stray animal's cage card only prevents it from being immediately euthanized when the legal holding period is over, if space is not available to hold the pet. It does not reserve the pet for adoption to that individual. When legally available, the pet will be adopted to the first eligible person requesting to do so.
- Pets given up by their owners that appear to be healthy and whose temperaments seem suitable are immediately available for adoption. However, an owner-surrendered pet cannot always be held long enough to be adopted. Due to space limitations, the pet may have to be euthanized immediately. Stray animals must be held for 5 working days; strays cannot be adopted during this legal holding period. Only an owner can reclaim a stray.
- Because too many healthy, adoptable pets are killed in animal shelters every year, state law requires every dog or cat adopted from a shelter to be sterilized. When applicable, Spay/Neuter deposits are charged at the time of adoption. These deposits are non-refundable should an adopted pet die or is lost before the operation due to accident, illness, or injury not covered by the health guarantee.
- The Spay/Neuter deposit will be paid to the bearer of the completed Spay/Neuter Certificate, whether it is the pet's adopter or the veterinary hospital which performed the surgery. List of participating veterinarians
- St. Bernard Parish Government cannot treat animals that are found to be sick after the initial veterinarian's exam or if the spay or neuter operation should prove to be complex (i.e. pregnancy or retained testicles). The adopter must decide to either return the pet for a full refund (or replacement) or must pay the additional fee(s) for the animal's treatment.
- Adult dogs (over 6 months) are screened for heartworm disease by blood smear only, therefore unless an adopted dog's history is known, we strongly recommend that an occult heartworm test be done immediately, at the adopter's expense.
- Cats receive an initial screen for Feline Leukemia; kittens must be at least 6 weeks old. Please be aware that to be considered negative, the cat (or kitten) must be retested within four weeks, at the adopter's expense.
- Adoption paperwork and animal preparation is time consuming, therefore be advised the shelter cannot start an adoption without having at least one half hour before closing for either the lunch hour or at the end of the workday.
- State law and Parish ordinance require that all dogs and cats over three months of age be vaccinated against rabies once a year. By ordinance, all dogs and cats must wear their license tags at all times. Cats that are allowed to freely roam must also be neutered or spayed and cannot be a nuisance to neighbors.
